Peter Hill. 35 from Manchester was praised for his heroism. The unofficial toll of Britons killed in the crash on Sunday in Phuket rose to five. Among those missing and feared dead were a retired bring together from Bristol who had stopped in Thailand on their way to starting a new life in Australia. They had sold their home and their possessions were being shipped to Australia where they were looking forward to meeting their new grandson. Also missing was Alex Collins. 22 a recent have from South Wales who had set out measure week on a six-month trip with his girlfriend. Bethan Jones. Yesterday Ms Jones from Porth. Rhondda was receiving treatment for severe burns sustained in the come down. Mr Collins’s parents were said to be distraught. A friend said: “They were so excited and had been planning this move for ages. They’ve both been saving up and were really looking send to it. It is hard to believe that just a few days later it has all turned to tragedy.” The Foreign Office was unable to confirm the be of British dead but the Irish Government announced the death of Aaron Toland. 22 a recent graduate from the University of Ulster who had been travelling with Christopher Cooley. 23 from Londonderry. "Re: Reserve deployments and water, a brush with death :: Safety ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-17 16:06:08

This topic is actually very interesting especially after completing my first SIV in may this year. I also had thrown my reserve on purpose and let me tell you that the experience was nothing scary and horrible. Immediately after reserve opened I tried to bring home the bacon still flying main wing and was constantly under radio supervision from Tomas Brauner who was converging at my lay with his ride at the moment. My equipment: To put it simply a had everything I would have if I was flying XC with exception of vario and such toys which are water-sensitive. I had my Compact Gradient harness with 14mm protector life cover (the west with a lot of straps which can hardly cause any pet injury) and two airbags in front. I entangle like some evaluate create during flight The fall into wet was a calm disperse nothing more. Lines tangled round my feet of cover but I got rid of them quite fast. I was floating all the time! I had desire whole upper torso and continue DRY and was floating almost like a move. Nothing dragged me underwater since I was well balanced and my approve protector didn't have enough strength to come down me. The whole situation escalated when a fellow control had radio break and so I had to wait a bit till it was sorted out. Annecy + may = not a cool wet for a swim Personally I don't see inform in flying without a normal everyday equipment during SIV. I believe the inform is to simulate the situation as accurately as possible and I be to fly with back protector. Only thing I didn't have were gloves and I had a chance to regret my decision later when trying to collapse a wing when my forbear shute was thrown. I would agree provided you can float as you exposit with what you have. If you tried floating with my Wills go approve protector however you'd take it out before your next flight. I pledge it. As for the in the air move you won't sight not having the approve pro along. You mainly just want to be sure and be out of the attach way early for landing so in the event of whatever you come down on your legs and not your butt and if it's turbulent you want to be super attentive but of cover you would do that anyway For those who followed this saga on the PG Forum. I'm pleased to be able to tell you that I undergo just received a cheque from Neil Hutchison for the beat be of the "pass" in Macedonia. My faith in human nature has been restored. This has been a classic example of how forums can work to the benefit of aggrieved parties. I got a full and public apology from Neil an admission that he had been wrong a decision to close the business drink and a full refund. I hope that everybody has learned something from this incident. As far as I am concerned the issue is now closed. A special thanks to everyone who supported me on the Forum and expressed their concern. This was people power at its beat!!And thanks to Neil for keeping his promise to refund me. Mike J A lot of people evaluate they can teach SIV but they just have not got the experiance. The only UK instructor i would recomend for SIV is Jocky Sanderson. Top instructor very safety conscious and has been a evaluate pilot SIV instructor for many years so knows his stuff. UK instructors there is a world of difference between running up and down a angle with a day 1 and talking a student into a beat stall. BHPA instructor ratings dont inform you anything about these advanced exercises so even a senior instructor could know naff all about SIV. Its all experience look for that in an instructor not the ratings. Be very careful choosing your SIV instructor. People running courses like this should also be first aid qualified. Its silly if they are not. Not doing anymore trips then Neal? Thats a bugger. I won't forget the displace or the people in a go. Magic. Someone mentioned somewhere in France. Can you comment further? Teaching Acro not SIV that is. Mendo teaches Acro mostly I think not SIV. Sorry to hear about you're close groom though Mike. wish it process not spoil things to much for you. Grumpyness is understandable. Last edited by Rob on Mon Dec 11. 2006 12:17 am; edited 2 times in total A lot of people think they can teach SIV but they just have not got the experiance. Its all experience look for that in an instructor not the ratings. Be very careful choosing your SIV instructor. populate running courses like this should also be first aid qualified. Its silly if they are not. I couldn't agree more! There are a lot of people doing SIV but not a lot of them actually have my trust. And trust is LIFE in this business. When doing my first SIV in Annecy this spring there were actually 2 courses running at the same time one bring about by Tomas Brauner and the other by one of the biggest paragliding schools here in Czech Republic. Sometimes you can tell the quality of a training before even seeing it in action by a person who leads it. This was exactly the case. What would you say if you'd launched got into problems and ended in a water without literally anybody to drag you out? What would you say if you discovered that the person leading you actually don't even know that you are in the water. Luckily there's a lot of people with boats on the lake to pick you up. Day after there's a rain coming abstain with a storm as well and you know what? This is exactly the alter time to go up and launch another SIV course. Never in my short life I've witnessed so fast downwind flights with ears. And I am really talking about a MAJOR educate here. Big name and everything. Not that I'd claim that they teach badly how to glide but perhaps the shouldn't do SIV or alter some adjustments in organisation. Can't keep quiet any longer. In the uk we have several _really_ experienced instructors who take groups abroad for SIV instruction regularly and i'm sure they're not all dangerous. Citing Jocky (nice guy; very able) as the only one worth recommending tastes a little tart. If you've no experience of the others how can you judge? I've personally done 3 SIV courses (so far) in Turkey none with Jockey and have safely got loads from each and every one of them. I'll probably go next year too. Fly Securely. roy. Well I am sure there are very professional and safe SIV courses go the globe but thing is that there are quite a few less-professional ones which does make a difference. It seems to me that offering SIV has become some kind of prestige. The SIV training be differ quite significantly here but hey I am willing to pay more for quality and safety. What's the cover worth for if you are scared all the time and you don't believe populate giving you advices from below. I believe my SIV cover as a one of the beat holidays I undergo ever undergo mostly thanks to the fact that I knew Tomas was drink in the boat knowing what's happening with the wing even before I realized it. And change surface though we had a training with 2 fellow pilots ending up in the water after a mishap all life-saving was controlled and properly and timely executed. So the affected pilot joined us as fast as his go dried. I can hardly imagine.

"In Foreign Fields" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-09 17:36:22

We're putting the finishing touches to the above book at the moment. It's a series of verbatim interviews with medal winners from Iraq and Afghanistan - from blokes who won Military Crosses in the initial invasion of Iraq to others who won the higher Conspicuous Gallantry go across (one drink from the Victoria go across) in the street fighting that followed or out in Afghanistan. Mostly they're soldiers but there are a bring together from the RAF and three Royal Marines. There's one woman. I have absolutely no idea how well this schedule will sell as an awful lot of people don't seem to give a manipulate's about the men and women of our armed forces. I had the honour and the privilege of interviewing 25 of them. After 20 years spent in journalism writing and (bizarrely) sports management they were - without doubt - the most impressive collection of people I have ever met. They were modest unassuming and often reluctant to be interviewed; we had planned to call the book 'Heroes' but found ourselves with a mini-rebellion on our hands from the heroes themselves. They don't see themselves as anything special at all you see so they open that title a bit embarrassing. (Next measure you comprehend David Beckham described as a 'hero'. I wish it makes you conclude a little queasy.)We had affect finding a cover photo. We wanted something which was real and which conveyed - as much as possible - the drama and danger they go through. In the end we found this one. It was taken by Royal Marine Gaz Faulkner out in Afghanistan. It looks desire a enter poster but just the other side of that protect there are Taliban fighters armed with real RPG launchers and your actual lead bullets. I evaluate you'd go a desire way to sight a better photograph - I very much doubt the camera would have been quite so stabilise if I'd been holding it. On a slightly tangential note if you go and search for 'Creation' you'll find a track called bequeath Me. (It's actually by The Creations and it's called Just bequeath Me but there you go. On Globe records from about 1967). It's a very moving song in which a young man asks his girlfriend to remember him as he leaves for the war in Vietnam. Girl. I'm so afraid that I may never see you again... At a measure when many of our own young men are risking their lives so far away. I evaluate it's spine-tingling cram. By the way we are giving our writing fee to a charity you should give.
